The Sense and Avoid capability pertains to the ability of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) to "sense" and "avoid" other aircraft. Aircraft, here, refers to all manner of powered or unpowered man-made aerial machines such as airplanes, rotorcraft, gliders, balloons, blimps and parachute.

The origin of the term Sense and Avoid can be traced to the Federal Aviation Administration's regulations governing the general operation of aircraft in the U.S National Airspace System (NAS). The rule states: "When weather conditions permit, regardless of whether an operation is conducted under instrument flight rules or visual flight rules, vigilance shall be maintained by each person operating an aircraft so as to see and avoid other aircraft".

UtopiaCompression provides inexpensive and low size, weight and power airborne Sense and Avoid (SAA) solutions to detect and avoid non-cooperative aircraft which might not have the on-board electronics such as transponders or Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast. Our SAA solutions are critical for manned and unmanned aircrafts to share airspace in military and civilian theaters.
